Fabian Edelstam’s work moves between photography, painting, memory, and cultural history. Born in Stockholm in 1965 and based in Paris since 1990, he has developed a distinctive practice in which familiar images are cut, enlarged, painted, and reconstructed by hand.

In The Stream of Consciousness, Edelstam brings together portraits, fragments of memory, and references drawn from European history and contemporary culture. Faces are a recurring presence, recognisable yet altered, reflecting his fascination with identity, perception, and the way we remember.

The exhibition has evolved organically throughout 2026, shaped by a moment of political and cultural uncertainty in Europe. Alongside portraits inspired by the Parisian scene of the early 1990s are echoes of 18th-century portraiture, pop culture, and fragments from the artist’s travels in India.

 

Across these different threads runs the idea of a stream of consciousness: images, memories, and associations appearing, shifting, and connecting. Rather than following a fixed narrative, the works invite us to move between past and present, the personal and the collective, allowing meaning to emerge in fragments.
